English has pairs of homonyms, and words that simply sound enough alike that you should write carefully, so your reader will understand you correctly.
Part of the trouble is that pronunciation differs around the country and among individuals. It’s not just about “tomayto,” “tomahto” or “eether,” “i-ther.” Do we say “ideah” or “idear”? Is he named “Charlie” or “Chahlie”? Do you “study” or “steady”?
The simple fact is that English is a spelling disaster! Really!
You think you know how to spell the aquatic creature with scales and fins? Actually, using the English spelling “system,” it could be spelled “ghoti.” Take the “gh” from “enough,” add the “o” of “women” (the plural), and finish it off with the “ti” from “nation.”
