“Desert” (one “s”) is a dry place. “Dessert” (two “s’s”) is sweet.
A desert is a hot dry place.
A dessert is something delicious after the meal.
Which would you prefer, to be in a desert or to eat a dessert? Which do you want to last longer? The better one has more letters. (Two “s’s” for a pie or a cake; just one in a dry, sandy place.)
Examples:
- My favorite dessert is apple pie a la mode.
- (“dessert” = the treat after the meal)
- The Sahara Desert is increasing in size, making life more difficult for the people living there.
- (“Desert” = arid region with little vegetation)
- The new rule is that if you’re old enough to be retired, you’re old enough to eat your dessert first.
- (“dessert” = the treat after the meal)
- The camels’ humps allow them to travel through the desert without water.
- (“desert” = area with little rain and few water holes)
