Part of the trouble is that we don’t all pronounce words the same way. It’s not just about “tomayto,” “tomahto” or “eether,” “i-ther.” Do we say “ideah” or “idear”? Is he named “Charlie” or “Chahlie”? Do you “study” or “steady”?
The simple fact is that English is a spelling disaster! Really!
You think you know how to spell the aquatic creature with scales and fins? Actually, using the English spelling system, it could be spelled “ghoti.” Take the “gh” from “enough,” add the “o” of “women” (the plural), and finish it off with the “ti” from “nation.”
